IHRO 250cc Class
Posted in Technical |Due to the low entries again this year in the 350cc class, I propose to make a separate 250cc class which will run together with the 350cc class at all meetings.
To ensure that the grids are as full as possible, I intend to amend the eligibility regulations to allow later machines into the 250cc class. These changes will ONLY apply to the 250cc class and no others.
I propose to extend the cut off date for 2 stroke machines to 1972 in line with the 4 stroke machines, but they will still have be of European manufacture and maximum of a single cylinder. As with the other classes, there must be proof that a machine of that type competed in a Grand prix event in the period.
I hope that this will bring out a few more bikes to help fill the grids as now they will have a dedicated class rather than just being put in with the 350cc class results.
I am looking for comments on this suggestion please.

A full grid increases the probability to have (and watch) an exciting race. So I like the idea of a 250cc class very much, new riders must be recruited for IHRO to keep the thing going. And spectators want to be attracted by racing. (Also possibly in midfield.) Lucky owners will come and join the new IHRO 250cc class.
But what a ex- GP 250cc does suit the new eligibility regulations and is not too expensive? I hope there are some models…the people i do know who´d like to go for IHRO don´t have Sponsors, they spent all money for race entries and travelling to the races and there´s not much left for a new bike perhaps.
Do i know the wrong ones?
For sure: I don´t want to criticize that IHRO has elitist bikes prepared on highest standards as i do love to watch them racing. Where else can you see them ? At parades in Spa, Sachsenring bla bla where ever that´s boring.
For me it´s just a reason why a lot of people cannot afford to play this game. I do hope a 250cc class can help, tonight i´ll read the “Continental circus” book with all GP results 1972 backwards…
I´d love to buy a 125cc Maico 2-strokes-worksbike to race it. A deadline of 1972 would allow to switch to the first watercooled ones. Graham, can we negotiate about the minimum weight for a 125cc ???
Where is my new Sponsor?
Anyways i wish to suggest some wildcards if the grid isn´t full. Possibly with loosened eligibility regulations and except competion. Riders could register on this site with their racebike, IHRO riders vote for the entry or non entry.
As this is a proposal at the moment, all details are open to discussion, but we have to be careful that the IHRO concept is not spoiled by any changes.
Wildcards are a possibility I have considered to increase interest and competition.
I can value the idea as an organizer of 3 years and as an observer of the IHRO for 11 years, and greet it if the standard of machines remains at the good and high level. Full classes are the salt in the soup.
Because a new generation of spectators grows up, one cannot explain to them the reason for half-filled classes, this new generation do not know the machines of that time any more.
To the technical regulations I would not like to express myself.
In 2005, with 350 cubic centimetres had in Schleiz Heinz Rosner, on a MZ, as a guest’s starter. And Ela’s consideration to 125 cc, another step maybe.
Excuse for my bad English, I am an East German and had to learn Russian.
It’s a very good idea to have a separate 250 class running with the 350 class race, and so hopefully keep the grid full. I would not like to see the 350 class struggle to survive as an individual race.
